Cranberry Salsa – the perfect holiday party dish

December 4, 2015

A while back (I cant even remember how many years now) my family discovered this amazing holiday treat while grabbing lunch at ¡La Salsa! during Christmas shopping. Our eyes got big with excitement when we headed to the salsa bar and saw the little "Cranberry Salsa" tag. We grabbed a chip, took a dip, and instantly fell in love. We jotted down the ingredients on the tag and headed straight to the grocery store afterward to get everything we needed to make a big batch of it at home! We've been perfecting the recipe it ever since.

Cranberry Salsa has become a Hipple Family Tradition that we make every year from Thanksgiving to Christmas (or until the stores stop stocking fresh cranberries).

It took us a long time to actually get around to typing out the exact recipe, but, even then, we still end up winging it most of the time. Thankfully I'm a master salsa taster ;) so it always comes out delicious!

I know Mom has the recipe somewhere, but I figured this year, I would perfect the recipe, myself, one more time. I forced myself to write everything down in exact measurements to share with you all! So here you go. You're gonna love it!

Happy Chopping!

Ingredients
(makes about 2 cups salsa)

  • 1 & 3/4 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1/2 an apple, peeled, cored, roughly chopped
  • 1/4 orange, peeled, chopped
  • 1/2 to 1 (depending on desired spiciness) serrano pepper , seeds removed, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 red onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 3 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 Tbsp lime juice
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

To prepare in a Food Processor or Blender:
(Note. If using a blender, keep in mind that it will not chop as finely as the food processor will so make sure to get things chopped pretty small – especially concerning those spicy peppers!)

  1. Boil down 1/4 cup cranberries in a few tbsp water to add one tbsp sauce to salsa (this creates a better cranberry flavor)
  2. Add whole cranberries, cranberry sauce, apples, oranges, onion, cilantro, honey, and lime juice.
  3. PULSE ONCE.
  4. Use a spatula to remove ingredients off the walls of the blender/food processor.
  5. REPEAT. If you feel your salsa needs to be more finely chopped, you can continue to repeat these steps till you reach desired texture.
  6. Add Salt to taste.
  7. Place in an airtight container and put it in fridge for at least 15 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  8. EAT WITH CHIPS!

By Hand: Micro-chop all ingredients, place in a medium-sized bowl, add honey, lime, and salt to taste, and mix thoroughly – EASY
