During my senior year in high school, I got the title of “famous chocolate chip waffle maker”. Somewhere down the road, I got people to believe that I made them the best, better than their own moms. This may have been either because my friends really loved to eat free food or, because I was always up for being the one in the kitchen stirring up the mix, tossing in the chips, and sending them out on plates.
I used to get calls on Saturday mornings from my friends asking if we could do a waffle breakfast, aka “Natalie, will you come over and make me waffles!?” I always fell for it, but it was always a blast.
I’d grab 7 things from my parents’ kitchen:
1. the waffle maker (duh!)
2. the extra large Costco bag of Krusteaz waffle mix (just add water)
3. chocolate chips
4. vanilla extract
5. cinnamon
6. nutmeg
7. milk (to wash all the deliciousness down)
I can’t tell you how many waffles we consumed during that school year. Lots! We even had a huge day-long birthday adventure for Aaron Feeney that ended in a “breakfast for dinner” surprise party with enough waffles to last you a lifetime. Enough to probably skyrocket Aaron Feeney’s allergy to gluten (sorry friend!).
Anyways, as you can see, these waffles were a pretty big deal. I’m not sure if I’ll ever know if they were truly “the best” but I do know I’ve won that title for life. Even my own mother knows me by that name. I knew this to be true when I moved out and she handed me the waffle maker saying it was mine.
Happy Waffle Eating!
